Strawberry – Queen of All Fruits

Scientific name for strawberry is Fragaria * ananassa Duch.  A perennial herb with height of only 10-40 cm.  Florescence from April to May and fruit can be harvested from June to July.

Native to South America but widely cultivated in China and Europe and other places. Strawberry has very high nutritional value, contains lots of nutrients.

Strawberry needs lots of sunshine, but it also has strong shade resistance. When there is enough sunshine, the plant is short but strong, small fruit but with deep red color, and much sweeter. If just with Moderate sunshine, fruit will be bigger but lighter color, and tasteless.  It will also take longer harvest time.  Strawberry will not grow if there is not enough sunshine.

Strawberry, 1 of the greatest fruits with very high in nutritional value, it is also known as the “Queen of All Fruits”.  Rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin PP, carotene, tannic acid, copper, aspartic acid, strawberry pectin, cellulose, iron, calcium, folic acid, and many other nutrients.

Especially for vitamin C, strawberry has up to 10 times higher than apples and grapes. The content of malic acid, vitamin B1, citric acid, vitamin B2, and calcium, carotene, phosphorus, iron are also up to 4 times higher than apples, pears and grapes.

People in Taiwan call strawberry as “natural vitamin pill”, and the Germans call it “magic fruit”.  The nutrient composition in strawberry can be easily digest and absorb into the body.  It will not be too heaty no matter how much we take.  It is a very healthy fruit for all ages.

With its richness of carotene and vitamin A, it helps to maintain healthy eyesight, children’s muscle and health development.  With its dietary fiber, it also help in digestion and avoid constipation.  With that, indirectly help to minimize acne and even prevent colorectal cancer.

Strawberries also have other high medical value. Strawberry extract, from strawberry plant has better curative effect on leukemia, anemia and other blood diseases. Strawberry tastes sour, has cooling effect, reduces phlegm, improve spleen health, sooth hangover, have certain level of preventive effect on gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases.  Drinking fresh strawberry juice can cure sore throat, hoarseness.  Eating fresh strawberry can improve appetite, sooths indigestion, cure malnutrition or help to gain weight after long illness.

There is a kind of wild strawberry in the Guangzhou area, the locals mash the stems and leaves to apply on burns, insect bites and even snake bites. Strawberry juice also has the effect of nourishing the skin. It is used to make all kinds of high class beauty cream. It has obvious effect on soothing wrinkles on skin.

Strawberries are difficult to clean, mainly because of their rough appearance, and the skin is very thin, easily broken with just a single wash. Also, strawberry is 1 of the herbaceous plants, it is relatively low. The fruit is delicate and juicy, which make it very vulnerable to diseases, insect bite and microbial invasion. Therefore, pesticides frequently used.  These pesticides, fertilizers and bacteria, etc., are easily attached to the rough surface of strawberries. If they are not cleaned properly, they may cause diarrhea, even pesticide poisoning.

To wash strawberries, it is better to use tap water to rinse them continuously. The flow of water prevents pesticide from penetrating into the fruit. Even after washing, strawberries should be soaked in diluted salt water or rice water(water that are obtained after washing the rice) for 5 minutes. Diluted salt water can kill the harmful micro-organisms on the surface of strawberries. The water of rice washing is alkaline, which can neutralize acidic pesticides.

When you wash strawberries, be careful not to remove the strawberry pedicel. If the strawberries are soaked in water, the residual pesticide will go into the fruit with water and making it worse. In addition, do not use detergent and other detergents soak strawberries, these substances are difficult to clean and easily absorb into the fruit, resulting in greater pollution.
